I met this man in Julian, California in the winter of 2009. I t was foggy and raining. There were massive fires the year before. Miles and miles of forest burned down. He told me his cabin had been taken by the fires. With no insurance, and no family, he was instantly homeless and destitute. He must have been in his late seventies. We talked for awhile and once I felt confident his story was ringing true, I remembered that for some reason I had a hundred dollar bill in my pocket. Not the norm for me. I gave it to him in hopes it would help him a little during these winter months. He started crying and right then I took his picture. I shook his hand, gave him a hug and said goodbye. I wonder where he is now...
