About the Shot

The photograph,"Surface Break", was taken off Aliwal Shaol at a spot known as "Shark Park" to help promote the research work being done on the Black Tip Sharks, Ragged Tooth Sharks and Catsharks by Marine Biologist Jessica Escobar in South Africa. Sharks are apex predators that are currently being captured at high rates, and their low reproductive and slow growth rates make them vulnerable to overexploitation. This study is addressing genetic population structure within blacktip sharks in order to propose local and international (Mozambique, Madagascar) conservation strategies. Sharks are giving a chance by using the results from this study and translating them into management and conservation strategies for sharks in South Africa. The outcomes of this project will provide for a better informed shark viewing experience for tourists, definitive management outcomes for fisheries managers and a greater scientific understanding of the social structures of Blacktip shark populations.
