About the Shot
In waiting for the perfect light to photograph this large lava river high on the slopes of Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, I ended up being cut off from my escape route, and had to spend a cold, wet night bivouacked on sharp, hot lava. I had to keep flipping over so that I didn't cook one side of me, or freeze the other side. I felt like John Muir when he was stuck on Mt. Shasta and had to do the same, on a steam vent. But it was worth it. This image has been on the covers of dozens of magazines and been a good selling print in my galleries.
