During a humanitarian trip with my family to Peru, we traveled up the Ucayali River of the Amazon to the small tribal village of Limogena. This elderly Shipibo woman, a native of the Amazon, stood by one of the modestly built wooden homes. When we questioned her about her age, a translator informed us that it had always been a mystery to her. She had never known her own birthday. Only the deep wrinkles in her weathered face held the answers.
