About the Shot
SMOKE LAKE REFLECTION
Photography is an act of personal exploration. It has also been said that ‘landscape photography is the pure act of discovery’. As I travel across Canada, I am always discovering new photographic opportunities, even in places that I have visited repeatedly. I am always looking with my ’mind’s eye’, making mental sketches as I drive about, and storing them in my memory. From time to time, these images resurface from the subconscious and manifest themselves into a new image.
Getting up early to photograph a sunrise is no guarantee that the sun will actually shine but, if you don’t get up, you most certainly won’t capture the photograph. I tried on three separate occasions to make this photograph but was foiled the two previous times by clouds. On this occasion, I placed a neutral graduated filter in front of my wide angle lens to reduce the exposure in the brighter sky and thus achieved a better light balance. Photographs like this sunrise reflection are the reason I get up at those ungodly hours!
